01 - The Beginning

The Beginning

It was a dark and stormy night in the data center. The servers were humming a low, monotonous tune, a lullaby for the restless sysadmins.

The Spark

Every great project begins with a spark. A moment of inspiration where the chaotic potential of the universe collapses into a singular, crystalline idea. For us, that idea was simple: make it better.

We didn’t know how we were going to do it, or even what “it” really was. But we knew that the current state of affairs was unacceptable. The code was spaghetti, the documentation was a myth, and the build times were measured in epochs.

“The only way to go fast, is to go well.” - Robert C. Martin

We took this to heart. We started by deleting code. Thousands of lines of legacy cruft, gone in a git rm. It was cathartic. It was terrifying.

The Arch

As we cleared the rubble, we began to see the shape of the new system. It wouldn’t be a monolith, nor a constellation of microservices so dense it formed a black hole. It would be… elegant.

  • Simple to understand
  • Easy to change
  • Fun to deploy

We called it Project Writebook.
